Armchair BEA Day 4 — My non-reading life

 

Today’s Armchair BEA topic is about (to me) the business of blogging and writing — freelancing, monetizing your blog, etc. I don’t do any of this. As I mentioned yesterday, my blog is a hobby and while it would be wonderful be able to make a living writing about books (which would require reading all day — yay!), it’s just not the reason I started my blog.

  So the alternate topic is to share a “fun” part of my life outside of books.  Well, I don’t know that I’d call it fun (yet) but I’ve recently taken up running.

  If you saw me you wouldn’t take me for a runner, but I’ve always had it in my mind that I’d like to run a 5k one day.  The town in which I live puts on a 5k as part of their end of summer festival over Labor Day weekend so this year I signed up.  No backing out for me now!

  I’ve been “training” for about a month already, just getting myself into the habit of running, and I’m impressed with myself for sticking with it.  I’m still doing run/walk intervals but I’m beginning to run more than I walk so I am making progress.

   I’m doing this on my own but with lots of help and encouragement.  I am working with a personal trainer at my gym and when he learned about my 5k goal he worked in some new exercises into our sessions to strengthen my legs for running.  Also, my sister-in-law is an amazing inspiration.  Two and a half years ago she decided that she wanted to take up running and do a half-marathon.  She has since run five of them.  When I mentioned to her that I was thinking of starting to run, she cheered loudly through the e-mail (I could hear her!) and she sent me links to all kinds of running sites she follows.  She has taken on the role of virtual coach and it means so much to me that I have her in my corner.  Yesterday she sent me this photo without any message, but I think the caption says it all:

I have to say I teared up a little bit.

    Brilliant picture! I showed it to my son, and he laughed too – he’s not doing any sports (except two hours at school) while I go to the gym. He got the message and called me “mean” (in a friendly way).

    I wish I could run but I’m glad I have started to the gym at least. Good luck with your 5K. I’m sure you can do it if you keep to your training schedule.

      Thank you, Judith! Bravo to you for starting at the gym. I find it hard to get there but once I’m in the building it’s not a struggle.

    I’ve had some friends who have gotten into running seriously. I just don’t think I can do it I’m happy to work out — aerobics, weights, etc. but I just don’t run. I have a dog, so I walk a lot, but not much running. Good luck!

  3. That’s great! I’ve been running for 2 years (off and on) now. This year I decided to do some more races (though finishing is my goal not winning) and did 2 5K this year. I’m not fast and it’s tough, but I’m so glad I do it. You’ll be so proud of yourself! Good luck!

    If I could find a way to make money by reading, taking photos and watching birds I’d be all set! But no, those are all hobbies… at least for now.

    I did a 5k walk one time but running is out of the question with my bad knees. Love that photo… any movement is good!

  7. That’s a fantastic hobby to take up! Good luck with the run! I would love to run (jog) a 5K someday. So far I just do a lot of fast walking uphill on my treadmill. I need to get a bit more in shape before I attempt anything like you’re doing. 🙂

  8. Good for you! That’s so awesome. I think it’s so much easier to train when you have a tangible goal in mind!
